I grew up in what I call the suburbs of Hialeah (unincorporated northwestern Dade County) in the 1970s and 1980s. Hialeah was "the big city" for my family and me. We would go there for many things, including moviegoing, shopping, recreation, and dining. I even worked at the former Burdine's store at Westland Mall in the late 80s. I rarely ventured to what I would consider Miami until I started attending FIU in 1987!
